July 28–August 26, 2008 Pre-Term is a full-time program that provides the opportunity for incoming SAIS Washington and Bologna-bound students to get a jump-start on their study of economics and get re-acclimated to the academic world. Participants may also meet fellow classmates, deans and recent alumni during informal events. Pre-Term runs during the month prior to the regular fall academic term. Although Pre-Term is optional, a majority of the incoming class attends. Participants choose from intermediate Microeconomics and, if eligible, intermediate Macroeconomics. Pre-Term also gives non-native English speakers the chance to strengthen their language skills by registering for English as a Second Language (ESL). Pre-Term courses do not count toward the number of courses required for graduation. Therefore, Pre-Term offers the possibility of completing up to two foundation economics courses while creating additional room for electives. Many SAIS M.A. students choose to take Microeconomics and, if eligible, Macroeconomics, during Pre-Term so that they do not use these courses toward the 16 non-language courses required for graduation. Several M.I.P.P. students also enroll Pre-Term, particularly if they are planning on registering for course work with Microeconomics or Macroeconomics as prerequisites during the academic year. Ph.D. candidates who did not complete their M.A. degree at SAIS may also accelerate their study of economics through Pre-Term. Successful completion of Pre-Term courses is noted by High Pass or Pass on a student's transcript. No mention of Pre-Term is noted for failed courses. Students who enroll in but do not pass Pre-Term economics courses must take these courses for credit as part of their curriculum during the year. Bologna-bound students are encouraged to participate in Pre-Term both in Washington and Bologna. Pre-Term 2008 program information is subject to change without prior notice.
